Rabat Day Trip from Fes Itinerary
Although it is a longer trip at two and a half hours, Rabat, Morocco's capital city and center of education, is well worth the visit. Often overlooked in favor of Casablanca, Rabat boasts its own charms, splendors, and unique history that should not be missed. After breakfast, your driver from Fez Charm Tours will pick you up from your hotel or riad to enjoy the scenic drive to Rabat, located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean at the estuary of the River Bou Regreg. Rabat is known for its wide tree-lined streets, shining minarets, spires, and domes, as well as its many parks and gardens. One highlight is the tranquil Chellah Gardens, set within the long-vacant ancient ruins of the Roman city of Sale. The lush, verdant vegetation here creates an ambiance reminiscent of an exotic tropical island rather than Morocco, providing the perfect opportunity for a leisurely stroll. Next, you’ll take a walk along the striking northern walls of the Udayas Kasbah, constructed as a defense for the city during the Almohad dynasty. You’ll then see the impressive fortified gate of Bab Oudaia before exploring the fascinating exhibits at the Udayas Museum, located within the palace of Sultan Moulay Ismail, which features a lovely collection of Moroccan folk art. After lunch, you will proceed up the hill overlooking the river to visit the Hassan Tower, a massive mosque with an unfinished tower topped by stork nests—an iconic symbol of Rabat. Adjacent to this is the stunning Mausoleum of Mohammed V, grandfather to the current king, noted for its gleaming white marble, imposing wrought-iron entrance, and a staircase leading to a magnificent dome, all adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows. In the heart of Rabat, you’ll find the Royal Palace of Mohammed VI, Morocco's king. While formidable in aspect, the palace is open to the public and features lovely interiors. It faces the King's personal mosque, which is traditionally designed and protected by three sturdy gates, completed in 1864. After leaving the medina, you can explore the Ville Nouvelle, or new city, where you can experience modern Moroccan life. Rabat is more relaxed than many other Moroccan cities, providing a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Fes, though prices may be slightly higher. When the tour is over, Fez Charm Tours will drive you safely back to Fes, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation.
