Explore Regal Rabat with Fez Charm Tours

Nestled on the Atlantic coast, Rabat is Morocco’s modern-day capital, home to just one million people. Although it is often overshadowed by its bustling, ultra-modern neighbor Casablanca, Rabat has a charm all its own.

Rabat makes for a fantastic day trip with its unique history and beautiful, quaint medina. While the city has embraced modernity, it remains much quieter and more relaxed than the larger Casablanca. One of the key sights in Rabat is the iconic Hassan Tower. Initially conceived in the late 12th century, it was meant to be the tallest minaret in the world, though construction was never completed. Nearby, you’ll find the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the resting place of the grandfather of Morocco’s current King. Mohammed V, who spent years in exile on Madagascar, returned victorious when Morocco gained independence from French rule. The Kasbah of the Udayas, built in the 12th century, is another must-see, offering stunning photogenic views and a tranquil garden, along with an intriguing museum.

A Mix of Modern and Historical Attractions

Other places to visit include the Museum of Modern Art, which was established by the current King, Mohammed VI, as well as the Archaeological Museum and Rabat Zoo. The zoo is modern and provides excellent care for the animals. On the southern side of the river, across from the ancient town of Salé, lies the Chellah. This historical site is famous for the Salé Rovers, the infamous Barbary corsairs who formed their own Republic in the 17th century. The area has also been home to the Phoenicians, Romans, and the Marinids, who constructed a fortress and holy necropolis here. The ruins of all these civilizations can still be explored today.

Though Rabat is often overlooked by tourists passing through on their way to places like Casablanca, Fes, or Marrakech, it truly deserves a visit for its blend of modern and ancient attractions.
