Sefrou and Bhalil Day Trip from Fez Itinerary
Your Fez Charm Tours driver will pick you up after breakfast at 10 am from your hotel or riad to start a memorable day trip. First, you will visit Bhalil, a quaint village nestled on the edge of the mountain range. This unique spot, off the beaten path, is known for its incredible cave dwellings, which are part of the oldest section of the village. Bhalil is also famous for its brightly colored homes, interconnected by mountain bridges. Several cave houses are open to visitors, but these fascinating dwellings are disappearing as the village modernizes. You'll also have the chance to see local craftsmen working on their handicrafts or preparing crops grown in the area. These caves are practical, as they remain cool in summer and offer protection from the mountain winter’s cold. Friendly local guides are available for a small fee to show you around. Bhalil is also known for its production of jellaba buttons, with women working in the alleys to carefully create cotton and button pieces for traditional jellabas. The village also produces olive oil and has traditional bread ovens. From the top of the village, enjoy breathtaking views of the green valley below and the surrounding hilltops. Next, you’ll travel to the peaceful town of Sefrou, located just 30 km from Fez. This town, which was originally a Jewish settlement, offers a tranquil break from the bustling city. You'll visit the Jewish quarter or mellah, wandering through narrow alleys and viewing the synagogue, Jewish cemetery, and traditional buildings. Continue to the quaint whitewashed medina with its unique terrace-style houses, and enjoy the clean, fresh feel provided by the river Aggai that flows through the heart of the town. The river often turns into a raging torrent every spring, which can be both a threat to buildings and an effective means of clearing debris left behind in the dry months. Bridges, too narrow for cars, cross the river at various points in the town. Your final stop will be the charming waterfalls near Sefrou. The area is known for its agricultural significance, and every June, the town hosts a renowned cherry festival celebrating the harvest, which has earned Sefrou a UNESCO non-material Heritage designation. Sefrou also holds various religious festivals, including those dedicated to Prophet Daniel, the saint Sidi Lahcen Ben Ahmed, and Lalla Rekiah, whose spring waters are said to cure madness. The shrine of Sidi Ali Bousserghine offers a stunning panoramic view of the area. At the end of this wonderful day, your driver from Fez Charm Tours will return you to Fez, where you'll be dropped off at your accommodation.
